2005-2008
How everything startedhe initial BIG project (funded by the BMBF) was aimed at developing an approach to health promotion for women in difficult life situations through a cooperation of scientists and partners from practice. The resulting BIG approach was tested and evaluated under the project management of the ISS in the model municipality of Erlangen. Since 2008, the Sports Department of the City of Erlangen has coordinated the BIG network, which ensures the sustainability of the project in Erlangen.

BIG.Manual/BIG.BayernIn order to support municipalities in implementing the BIG approach, the BIG manual was developed together with partners from the field. Using step-by-step instructions and examples, it describes all phases of project implementation. The implementation of the manual was tested in Bayreuth. The project was sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Health.

2012-2019
BIG-KompetenzThe competence center was established in 2012 through a cooperation with BARMER. It serves as a contact point for all BIG locations and promotes the further expansion of BIG. Thanks to additional funding from the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Health, five more Bavarian municipalities (Marktredwitz, Straubing, Dillingen, Amberg-Sulzbach and Großostheim) were persuaded to implement BIG.

2015-2019
BIG DisseminierungIn the course of the BIG Dissemination (2015-2018), a state coordination office (Landeskoordinationsstelle) was created in Berlin, supported by BARMER. The State Coordination Office was the contact point at regional level, took part in planning meetings and promoted the anchoring of the BIG approach in the overall strategic strategy for the promotion of physical activity. In this context, BIG was transferred to two Berlin districts (Treptow-Köpenick and Tempelhof-Schöneberg).
